The Challenge
Garden machinery is a hard thing to sell online. Log splitters, chippers and rotavators are heavy and bulky, so a standard “flat rate” shipping charge either overcharges customers or loses the seller money. In 2006 Titan Pro asked us to build a bespoke ecommerce website to sell its range of garden equipment and accessories.
Alongside the shipping problem, the shop needed to take payments through more than one provider, handle EU tax, and support a business that also repairs the machines it sells.
Our Approach
We built the site on a custom version of our Atlas CMS, with the ecommerce features designed around how Titan Pro actually trades:
- Custom shipping calculated from the weight of the order, the delivery postcode and the country
- Multiple payment providers and integration with EU tax systems
- Upselling of accessories and related products on each product page
- Customer support tools and management of workshop-based repairs
- Extra reports, filtering options, order forwarding to suppliers, and a custom mailing list that can be exported
The Results
Customers get an accurate delivery price for a heavy machine before they check out, instead of a guess, and can pay with the method they prefer. The site also carries product guides, how-to videos and FAQs, which help buyers choose the right machine and position Titan Pro as a specialist. Behind the scenes the owners manage products, orders, pages and news from one system with custom modules to allow orders to be sent to third party distributors and warehouses.
Long-Term Impact
Today the shop covers chippers and shredders, log splitters, rotavators, lawnmowers, spares and more, offers sign-in or guest checkout, and runs a blog of seasonal advice. It shows how a bespoke ecommerce build can be customised to handle trading problems that off-the-shelf platforms struggle with.
