The Challenge
AB Electronics UK is our own business, which designs and sells a range of expansion boards for the Raspberry Pi and other single-board computers. In 2012 we needed a website that could sell these products to customers around the world, from a company that is also a web developer.
That meant the site had to be a working test-bed for our ecommerce system as well as a shop. It needed to take payments through more than one provider, deal with tax correctly for international orders, work well on phones, and give customers the technical help they need to use a development board.
Our Approach
We built the site on our Atlas CMS with bespoke ecommerce, and used it as the base for developing new features for the ecommerce system we offer to clients. It includes:
- A shop organised by function: analogue-to-digital and digital-to-analogue converters, digital I/O, serial (RS232, RS485 and 1-Wire) and real-time clock boards, plus breakout boards
- Compatibility pages for the Raspberry Pi, the Pico, Arduino, the Asus Tinker Board and Orange Pi
- Prices shown excluding VAT, and worldwide shipping
- A knowledge base of articles, with the newest and most popular highlighted
- A support forum, where customers can ask questions and share what they have built
The Results
The website sells our products internationally, takes payments through several payment services and handles overseas tax, and it shows what our ecommerce platform can do: a bespoke system, built on Atlas CMS, that we edit ourselves. The knowledge base and the forum answer customers’ questions before they need to contact us.
Long-Term Impact
Launched in 2012, AB Electronics is still our most advanced ecommerce site and the place where new features are proved before they reach client sites.
